Summary
Carla Day, a young and gifted girl lives for excitement and challenges. Her murky past predisposes her to criminal activity, to satisfy her craving for excitement. The adventure starts when she becomes part of a plot to steal drugs and money. Whilst the heist goes wrong, she runs off with what she wants. The drug lord known as Phillipe catches her and she dramatically escapes, believing she has killed him. Stranded on a mountain road, she waves down Max Fortune, a man seeking excitement to lift him from his hum-drum life. She takes the lift and now Max becomes embroiled in her troubles as they run from Phillipe and his men. Carla likes Max and he likes her. For his protection, she takes him to her home. Max presses her to explain what he is caught up in and discovers she is under the wing of the head of a shadowy global enterprise. Her guardian is known affectionately as ‘The Duke’ and he runs ‘The Organisation’. The Duke sees that Max is a steadying influence on the girl and induces him to work for him as a trouble shooter. Max is caught up in the glamour of extreme wealth and he loves Carla. The story develops as a series of missions, starting with a valuable statuette. There is an underlying thread of conflict with Phillipe as he crosses their path from time to time. As he gets closer to killing them, they continue to outwit him. Recovering a hijacked submarine and trapping and recovering documents from a spy. Carla’s past unravels with the murder of The Duke, by Phillipe. It turns out that The Duke discovers Phillipe had an affair with his wife, made her pregnant and Carla and her twin sister Amy were adopted. Amy had a good life, Carla’s turned bad. When Carla discovers Phillipe, the man she hates is her father, the story takes another turn. Max is seriously injured as Phillipe escapes. Part of his treatment involves an experimental stem cell procedure, a complication transforms his life, both good and bad. It is during an adventure of their own that Amy turns up in the Maldives. Phillipe mistakes Amy for Carla and tries to capture her. Amy manages to seek safety in a crowd of people. Because of an earlier mission, a new character called Jeff enters the tale. He is trying to retrieve a valuable artefact that is in Max & Carla’s possession. Now M&C are under attack by Phillipe & Jeff, both formidable adversaries, determined to succeed. M&C escape, but through a relationship with Amy, Jeff continues his quest to recover the artefact. It results in a battle of wits on all sides to live another day. Jeff is killed by Phillipe and Max believes Phillipe has been disposed of by the men Max paid to do the killing. More missions take place, recovering diamonds from the Zenobia, recovering the lost artefact from the jungle, hiding the existence of a tomb in Egypt, one they are trapped in and have to escape from, discover who is leaking data from a mineral survey in the Congo, tracking down the Russian who killed the survey team and bringing him to justice, conflict with the FBI in the process. The final mission is the result of nuclear waste being dumped into a live volcano by Russian Mafia. The Organisation are not responsible directly, but a blackmailed head of the waste storage subsidiary lands them in it. Max alone is sent to investigate, because unbeknown to him, he has cancer. He discovers evidence of the dumping and reports back, asking to be picked up at sea. He has radiation poisoning and heads out to sea, wondering if he will be picked up before the volcano erupts. The scene is set for Fire Ice, the sequel to this book, already written. The Duke sees that Max is a steadying influence on the girl and induces him to work for him as a trouble shooter. Excerpt
Rubin made his detailed notes, relating them to sketch drawings of the tomb layout. The enormity of the discovery and countless questions flooding his mind made him tired and dizzy; his handwriting started off neat and legible, but was quickly becoming more distorted and peppered with crossings out. He now set up the torches to light the first wall and he fumbled with the tripod and camera, as he focused the first shot. The euphoria that had been gripping him was subsiding and he realized that he was drenched in sweat, breathing hard and his upper body ached. The cramp in his left arm, through holding the clipboard, had spread to his chest and back. The room seemed to darken noticeably; “the torch batteries are failing,” he thought, and stood upright to ease his pain with a stretch. As he stood over the camera and pressed the shutter button, he shut his eyes so he would not be blinded by the flash. His torch moved on the smooth floor, at that moment, and rolled around in an arc, lighting the back wall. The shadow of both the sarcophagus and Rubin, were projected on the wall in front of the camera, from the backlighting. The click of the shutter seemed loud in the silence of the tomb, but there was no flash and that startled Rubin as he opened his eyes. When he moved, the shadow on the wall in front of him moved. He saw the shadow of Nahep, sitting on the edge of his sarcophagus, behind him. The shadow of the head and body moved, its arms slightly away from its body, griping the edge of the stone. Rubin spun round, but there was nothing there. Petrified with fear he stood staring at the sarcophagus in the smothering cold silence. There was a sudden noise, stone grating against stone coming from the lid. It was a sound like the lid being raised, a micron at a time, a secretive, creeping up on you kind of sound. No longer breathing and with his eyes fixed on the sarcophagus, Rubin, slowly, imperceptibly, reached down for the torch on the floor. He swung the beam at the lid, making its sharp shadow leap up the wall, just as blackness closed in on him and the crushing pain in his chest added to his mounting terror. The lid dropped 5mm onto its seating with a terrifying thud. Driven by blind terror, Rubin turned and dived towards the small hole in the wall leading out of the tomb, into the tunnel. The coarse sandstone floor tore open the flesh on his hands and knees, but he felt nothing. Halfway through the hole, the decorative belt of his jacket snagged, holding him back like someone had grabbed it. With the superhuman strength of terror, he scrabbled free and ran headlong up the tunnel. The torchlight formed chasing, grabbing shadows, coming after him. Still running, he looked behind and drove the shadows back, with the waving beam. In an instant, a wall of agony, blinding light then black flashed through him, followed by oblivion---
