Description: Euripides' Andromache, a new verse translation by Bruce Van Deventer. After Troy fell to the Greeks, Andromache, the wife of the slain Trojan prince Hector, was taken as prize and given to Achilles' son Neoptolemus as his concubine. He treated her kindly and in the fullness of time she bore him a son. But Neoptolemus went on to take as his wife Hermione, the daughter of Menelaus, but she could bear him no children. Enraged with jealousy, she then plotted the death of Andromache, and the play opens with Andromache taking sanctuary at the temple of Thetis, the goddess who is also Achilles' mother, mother of the man who killed Andromache's husband. This new verse translation is intended to bridge the gap between the fully rhyming traditional verse translations of the 19th century and starker and more academic modern versions. An informative guide to the characters, places, and pronunciation is also provided. Also available in paperback and as a full cast audiobook, which is available 2 CDs, or electronic download at Audible, or in full stereo at the Amazon mp3 store.
