Excerpt
Editorial note Since mid-December 2003, an epidemic of highly pathogenic avian influenza in domestic fowl and a variety of other birds caused by influenza A(H5N1) has been reported in eight Asian countries (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Republic of Korea, Thailand, and Viet Nam). The avian epidemic is historically unprecedented in its scale, geographical spread, and economic consequences for the agricultural sector. The epidemic also has important implications for human health. H5N1 strains have a documented propensity to exchange genes with viruses from other species. Some of these strains have demonstrated a unique capacity to cause infection and severe disease in humans.
