Excerpt: On Feb. 4, Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham released the Department of Energy?s (DOE) Fiscal Year 2003 budget request to Congress. The $21.9 billion request is an increase of over $580 million, or 2.7 percent, from the current fiscal year?s appropriations. There was a large turnout at the press and formal stakeholder briefings and program-specific breakout sessions at DOE Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Joining Secretary Abraham (at the podium) at the formal budget briefing for stakeholders are Deputy Secretary Francis S. Blake (far left) and (l-r) Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator, National Nuclear Security Administration, John A. Gordon; Under Secretary for Energy, Science, and Environment Robert G. Card; and Chief Financial Officer Bruce M. Carnes.
