EEN: De zondag waarop Braam ter wereld kwam, veegde de pasgeboren meizon de melkwitte nevelslierten uit haar ogen en keek ze verwonderd toe hoe Hille haar lippen op elkaar perste en duwde, duwde, zoals ze in haar hele leven nog niet had geduwd. Ze was die ochtend al heel vroeg uit het hol gekropen, heel voorzichtig om haar kolossale buik niet te stoten. Ze had zorgvuldig het zachtste plekje gezocht op de met kussentjesmos begroeide helling, en terwijl haar ademhaling steeds zwaarder werd en de golvende pijnen elkaar steeds sneller opvolgden, zag Hille boven de gebogen horizon van haar buik de zon opgaan. Net toen de eerste stralen haar ogen genadeloos verblindden, tolde een messcherpe pijn als een kurketrekker door haar onderlijf. Hille stond moeizaam op, en wijdbeens steunend tegen een eik perste ze met een dierlijk diep gegrom haar jong de wereld in.
