Excerpt: 1.INTRODUCTION [1] Broadly speaking, Biosecurity describes the concept, process and objective of managing ? in a holistic manner ? biological risks associated with food and agriculture. Interest in Biosecurity in food and agriculture is growing due to a number of often interrelated factors, including, increased international trade and travel, technical progress, heightened awareness of biological diversity issues, and greater attention to the environment and to the impact of agriculture on the environment. This has resulted in traditional institutions dealing with food safety and with plant and animal health having to expand their areas of expertise and involvement beyond food and agricultural production, to areas such as public health, trade, agricultural competitiveness, tourism and the environment. A diverse set of national and international Biosecurity-related polices, legislation and programmes have ensued.
